Lower & Firmer Suspension with a Wider Track. The front track is 20mm wider, rear track is 10mm wider improving the cars stance on the road & improving road holding. With higher spring rates at the front, the ‘Cup’ suspension is firmer & provides more responsive behaviour. Also enhancing driving efficiency are the flexible lower leaf of the front bumper, and the larger rear hatch-mounted spoiler, providing greater downforce and aerodynamic refinement.” These modifications are complemented by the adoption of tyres of an extra-stiff structure. Steering response is thus more direct, with a more incisive front suspension. It also includes Anthracite Alloy Wheels (rather than silver).

Breif History;

It’s quick (0-62mph in 6.9sec), torquey, brilliantly chuckable, addictively interactive, cheap to run. Perfect.  Best of all, is that the Renaultsport Clio 182 represents the last of the genuine supermini-sized hard-edged hot hatches.  Sharing the spirit of the Renault 5 GT Turbo, Peugeot 205 GTI & the Mk1 VW Golf GTI.

The Clio Renaultsport story began in 1999 with the Clio 172, a car which lacked the sparkle of the previous Hot Clio 16V & Williams Clio.  It used Renault’s first torsion-beam rear suspension & the Renaultsport engineers hadn’t quite got the hang of it. Various revisions over the years helped sharpen its act.  However in 2004, the 2-litre, Mecachrome developed engine (not related to the F-series in the Hot Clio 16V & Williams) gained a power hike to 182PS, or 180bhp.  Twin tailpipes were its obvious identifier, & as with the 172 there was a ‘Cup’ dimension. Central to this was ‘Cup’ suspension, the front track is 20mm wider & the rear track is 10mm wider improving the cars stance on the road & improving road holding.  With higher spring rates at the front, the ‘Cup’ suspension is firmer and provides more responsive behaviour.  These modifications are complemented by the adoption of tyres of an extra-stiff structure. Steering response is thus more direct, with a more incisive front suspension.  Also enhancing driving efficiency is the flexible lower leaf of the front bumper & the larger rear hatch-mounted spoiler, providing greater downforce & aerodynamic refinement.  There was also a ‘Cup’ visual pack with a front splitter & a larger rear spoiler.  You could either buy a hardcore Clio 182 Cup with these enhancements & its stripped-out cabin.  However, most buyers bought the better equipped regular 182, which had climate-control & other luxuries, all worth having for your daily driver.  Then adding the Cup packs as an manufacture option. Giving the best of both worlds.

In 2005 Renualt launched the Clio 182 Trophy (only 500 came to the UK).  The Trophy had the same engine, suspension was lowered a little more, 11-spoke instead of eight-spoke alloy wheels, Capsicum Red paint, a bigger tailgate spoiler from the Clio V6, racing Sachs dampers with thicker piston rods & remote reservoirs at the front, Trophy logos & a numbered plaque.  One of the engineers responsible for Trophy development had a 205 GTI 1.9 in his garage, as a point of reference.  The idea was to make a modern version of that GTI’s blend of attributes, with a bit more robustness but keeping the same old buzz.  With the Clio 182, entertainment will be always on hand.
