Brief History: The second generation Range Rover, commonly known as the Range Rover P38 or P38A outside of Land Rover, with ‘P’ coming from ‘Project’ and ‘38A’ after the factory building in which the production line was based. Inside Land Rover however, it was known as, Pegasus, which was the winning design, prepared by George Thomson’s styling team. During production Land Rover was also referred to, as either the ‘New Range Rover’ or by its model designation of ‘LP’.

The Range Rover P38 was never made available for commercial or utility applications, although it was chosen as Police motorway patrol vehicle across UK. Also a small number were custom-built, including two which were made as State Review models for the British Royal Family.

The Range Rover P38A was introduced in September 1994 and was designed to compete more effectively in the luxury-car market.  Design priorities were therefore biased towards refinement and ride quality, although the vehicle was also an excellent off-road performer.

With its new ladder-frame chassis design, the body had a steel inner shell and many of the outer panels were also made of steel to improve fit and finish, although bonnet, front wings and lower tailgate were of traditional Land Rover aluminium alloy. The second generation incorporated new engine management and improved electronic air suspension (called EAS) that allowed automatic, speed determined height adjustment. The five suspension heights offered by EAS are (from lowest to highest in terms of height) “Access”, “Highway”, “Standard”, “Off-Road”, and “Off-Road Extended”. Height was also adjustable manually between the first four settings. The “Off-Road Extended” setting was only accessible automatically by the EAS ECU.

In 1999 the Range Rover V8 received a new Bosch engine management system from the BMW 7 Series, which replaced the Lucas GEMS system. Also only 4.6L V8 petrol engine were fitted with the ZF 4HP24 automatic gearbox. This gave the 4.6L V8 petrol model four-wheel traction control, whereas initially the 4.0L V8 and the 2.5L diesels only had two-wheel traction control to the rear wheels. Later versions of the 4.0L V8 and the 2.5L diesels had four-wheel traction control.

From its launch in September 1994, all 167,041 P38’s sold worldwide were built at Solihull, with the last being built in December 2001.
